Focus & Problem Solving

Ages 5–12. Help your child slow down, notice what matters, make a plan and try another solution when the first one doesn't work. 48 live online classes · Teacher-led · Small groups of up to 5.

About this program

Paying attention and working out what to try next are skills children use in every lesson and every game. In this program children practise noticing the important clues, listening for steps, remembering information, spotting patterns and breaking a problem into parts. Over 48 live classes they work on puzzles, games and everyday challenges, and learn to try an idea, check it and try another. The activities are set for their age and they are not tests. These skills help with schoolwork, with following instructions at home and with solving small problems, such as finding a lost item or planning a game.

What children practise

  • Notice clues
  • Compare choices
  • Make a plan
  • Test and improve

What happens in a class?

These three steps guide every class. Classes do not follow an identical script or timing.

  • Hear a challenge. The teacher introduces a story, game, question or everyday situation to explore.
  • Have a go. Children actively take part: thinking, choosing, speaking, drawing, building, asking questions or solving problems.
  • Try and improve. The teacher adds a new detail, challenge or point of view. Children use feedback, rethink their ideas and try another approach.

Example activity

The situation: The teacher hides an object and gives three clues, one of which does not matter.

What children do: Children listen carefully, decide which clues are useful and work out where the object is.

How they work together: They explain their thinking to the group and compare it with other children’s answers.

What changes: The teacher adds a new clue that changes the answer. Children rethink what they know.

Skill practised: Separating useful information from distractions and adjusting a plan.

Where it helps: Finding a lost item, following instructions or choosing a way to solve a problem.

How learning connects to everyday life

A real-life moment: Your child is stuck on a puzzle or a homework question and wants to give up.

Using the skill: They can break it into smaller parts, try one idea, check it and then try another way.

A question to ask at home: “What could we change and try again?”

Progress through practice

Over the 48 classes, children keep coming back to the same skills in new situations.

  • Explore new situations.
  • Practise important skills again and again.
  • Meet different challenges.
  • Try again with feedback.
  • Build independence through practice.
  • Discover where those skills can help in real life.
