Communication & Public Speaking for Ages 5–12: Program Guide

Children learn to tell stories, hold a conversation, ask good questions and speak to a group, with practice in small friendly groups rather than on a stage.

The six modules (ages 5–12)

Module 1: Storytelling

Children turn real events and ideas into a story that is clear and has a proper ending.

What a child might do. Tells an original story with understandable events and a meaningful ending.

Try at home (about 2 minutes). Pick any three objects from a drawer and ask your child to tell a story that uses all three, with a beginning, a problem and an ending.

Module 2: Conversation Skills

Children keep a two-way conversation going and ask questions that follow what the other person said.

What a child might do. Keeps a short exchange going and asks a relevant follow-up.

Try at home (about 2 minutes). Play the question game: you say one sentence about your day and your child asks one follow-up. See how many rounds you can keep going.

Module 3: Expressive Communication

Children explain how to do something, or why they think something, in a way a listener can follow.

What a child might do. Shows a listener how to perform an age-appropriate action or solve a small problem.

Try at home (about 2 minutes). Ask your child to teach you something they know well, like making a paper boat, using only their words. Do exactly what they say.

Module 4: Speech Delivery

Children practise their voice: speaking clearly, at a steady pace and stressing the important words.

What a child might do. Uses pauses, emphasis and intelligible speech to convey a message.

Try at home (about 2 minutes). Read one sentence three ways: slowly, with a pause, and with one word stressed. Ask which version sounded most interesting and why.

Module 5: Interviews & Questioning

Children learn to ask useful questions, listen to the answer and follow up.

What a child might do. Conducts a simple interview and communicates what was learnt.

Try at home (about 2 minutes). Let your child interview a family member with three questions they wrote. Ask them to tell you one new thing they learnt.

Module 6: Public Speaking

Children build up from short sharing to speaking for a small group about something they care about.

What a child might do. Presents a short story, explanation or demonstration with an understandable purpose.

Try at home (about 2 minutes). Ask for a 30-second talk on a favourite thing, to the family. Afterwards say one thing you liked and one thing you wanted to hear more about.

Common questions

My child is shy. Is this program suitable?

Yes. Children begin with short, comfortable sharing and build up gradually. Quiet children can become clear speakers without needing to be loud.

How is it different from a speech class?

Public speaking is one of six modules. Children also work on stories, conversation, explaining and asking questions.
