Toy Has a Job: A Tiny Pretend-Play Activity for Toddlers
By Nurche Team · 29 August 2026
A toy does not need to come with a script. In fact, when your toddler gets to decide what a toy’s “job” is, a small moment of play can become a big moment of imagination. “Toy Has a Job” is a quick, low-prep activity that invites your child to give a familiar toy or object one meaningful action.
Let Your Child Lead the Story
Choose one familiar toy—perhaps a truck, doll, spoon, or stuffed animal. Hold it up and say, “This truck has a job. What does it do?”
Then pause. Your child may move the toy, make a sound, point, gesture, or use one word. A truck loading blocks, a spoon feeding a teddy, or a doll going to sleep are all wonderful answers. There is no need to correct, explain, or ask for a longer response. Their idea is the story.
Dialogue cues to try:
- “Hmm, this teddy has a job today. What does it do?”
- “Oh! You made the truck go. Where is it going?”
- “The spoon is helping. Who is it helping?”
- “You have an idea!”
- “I see it—it’s working hard.”
...
Follow Their Idea—Just One Step
Respond to what your child shows you and add only one gentle next question. If they load blocks into the truck, you might say, “It picks them up! Where now?” If they say “home,” point toward home, or drive the toy away, the play has done its job.
Stopping after a successful little exchange keeps the activity light and enjoyable. It also helps your child feel heard: their idea mattered, and you followed it.
Keep the conversation simple:
Parent: “This truck has a job. What does it do?”
Child: (Loads blocks.)
Parent: “It picks them up! Where now?”
Child: “Home!”
Parent: “Home—off it goes!”
