Teaching Children Empathy: 5 Everyday Activities to Try at Home

By Sanower Ahmedi, LIfe skills Educator · 3 November 2026

Have you ever noticed your child laughing when someone cries, struggling to understand why a friend is upset, or finding it difficult to share?

You might wonder: Does my child understand how others feel?

Empathy is the ability to recognise, understand and care about another person's feelings. It helps children build friendships, communicate kindly and develop meaningful relationships.

But empathy isn't something children learn simply by being told to "be nice." They develop it through everyday experiences, conversations and play.

The good news? You don't need complicated lessons to teach empathy. Small moments at home can make a big difference.

5 Everyday Activities to Help Children Develop Empathy

1. The Feelings Detective

Show your child pictures of different facial expressions. Ask: "How do you think this person feels? What might have happened?"

Builds: Emotional awareness.

2. What Would You Do?

Describe simple situations, such as a friend falling down or someone sitting alone. Ask your child how they could help.

Builds: Compassion and perspective-taking.

3. Storytime With Feelings

While reading a story, pause and ask: "Why do you think the character is sad?" or "What would make them feel better?"

Builds: Understanding others' emotions.

4. Little Acts of Kindness

Invite your child to help set the table, comfort someone or share something with a family member.

Builds: Kindness and consideration.

5. Take Turns, Take Perspectives

Play a simple role-reversal game. Let your child pretend to be the parent, teacher or friend. Discuss how each person might feel in different situations.

Builds: Perspective-taking and social understanding.
