Should Children Make Their Own Decisions? Start With These Everyday Choices

Blue cup or yellow cup?” It sounds like a tiny question. But what happens when we stop choosing everything for our children?

We often want our children to become confident, independent thinkers. Yet, in the rush of everyday life, we pick their clothes, decide their activities, and sometimes answer questions before they have a chance to think.

Children don't learn to make decisions overnight. They need small opportunities to express what they want, consider their options, and discover what happens next.

Decision-making doesn't have to begin with big responsibilities. It can start with everyday moments:

- Getting dressed: “Would you like the green shirt or the blue one?”
- Playtime: “Should we build a tower or create a bridge?”
- Snack time: “Would you prefer an apple or a banana?”
- Solving a problem: “Your blocks keep falling. What could you try differently?”

These questions give children a chance to think instead of simply follow instructions. As they grow, you can introduce more options and ask them to explain their choices.

Not every choice will work out ...

and that's part of learning.

If your child builds a tower that keeps falling, resist the urge to fix it immediately. Ask, “What do you think we could change?”

When the situation is safe, let children try, make adjustments, and discover alternatives. They begin to understand that a decision isn't the end of the process; they can think again and try something new.

Your role isn't to make every decision for your child. It's to help them learn how to make one.
