Cause Web: Can Your Child See More Than One Reason?

When something happens, children often look for one simple reason: “He lost because he was slow” or “It rained because the clouds came.”

But real life is rarely that simple.

Cause Web is a quick storytelling game that helps children explore how multiple causes can lead to one outcome—and what changes when one cause is removed.

Try This

Place an outcome card in the centre.

For example:

“The team lost the match.”

Ask your child to add three possible causes around it:

- They didn't practise enough.
- Two players were tired.
- The team changed its strategy.

...

Now remove one cause and ask:

“What changes in the story if this didn't happen?”

Then ask:

“Which cause mattered most? Why?”

This simple activity encourages children to connect ideas, explain their thinking and understand that a story can have more than one contributing reason.

The goal isn't to find the perfect answer. It's to help children build a story that is fair, logical and supported by what they know.

Use everyday moments—sports results, a missed bus, a broken toy or a disappointing day.

Instead of asking only “Why did this happen?”, ask:

“What else contributed?”

Because better storytellers don't just tell us what happened.

So the next time your child asks “Why did this happen?”, don’t rush to give them the answer. Ask:

“What else could have contributed?”
