The Detail Filter: What Should Your Child Keep?

By Sanower Ahmedi, Parenting Coach · 18 September 2026

Your child notices everything.

The red car.

The tiny leaf.

The boy’s blue shoes.

The dog barking in the corner.

But can they tell which details actually matter?

That’s where the Detail Filter Gate comes in.

Today, your child becomes the gatekeeper.

KEEP it if it helps.

SKIP it if it distracts.

Let’s see what makes it through. 👀

Draw two simple boxes:

🟢 KEEP

🟠 SKIP

Now give your child a few details:

- The puppy was stuck behind the gate.
- The puppy was wearing a blue collar.
- The boy helped open the gate.
- There were two birds on a tree.
- The puppy ran to its owner.

Ask:

“Which details should pass through?”

Let them decide.

Don’t correct them straight away.

Instead ask:

“Why did you keep that one?”

That little question gets them thinking about what matters and why.

...

Only a Few Can Pass

Now make the gate smaller.

Tell your child:

“Only THREE details can enter.”

Give them:

- Maya saw dark clouds.
- Maya had pink shoes.
- The wind became very strong.
- A butterfly landed nearby.
- They quickly packed their things.
- It started raining.

Which three would they choose?

Then ask:

“If I only heard these three, would I understand what happened?”

If something feels missing, let them swap one detail.

That’s the challenge:

Keep what helps.

Remove what gets in the way.

...

Now say:

“You can bring ONE skipped detail back.”

Which one deserves another chance?

Ask:

“What makes this detail important?”

There may be more than one good answer.

The goal isn't getting the “right” card.

It's learning to choose with a reason.

Why Parents Should Try It

This tiny game practises a big skill:

Knowing what to say — and what to leave out.

Your child is learning to:

- Notice important information
- Ignore distractions
- Organise their thoughts
- Explain their choices
- Think about what the listener needs
